Flights from Johannesburg to London

Because of the distance that needs to be travelled and the fact that the flight is international, flights leaving Johannesburg for London depart from O.R. Tambo International Airport as opposed to the smaller airfields such as Rand Airport and Lanseria Airport; and they enter the UK at London’s Heathrow Airport. Some airlines fly directly from Johannesburg to Heathrow. These include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and South African Airways. Flying direct takes between 10 hours 45 minutes and 11 hours 5 minutes to complete the 9039-kilometer journey. A number of other airlines also fly to London but include stopovers along the way. Emirates makes a stop in Dubai Airport, Etihad in Abu Dhabi, and KLM in Amsterdam. Air France makes a stop in Paris at Paris De Gaulle Airport, while Qatar Airways goes via Doha Airport. Egyyptair goes through Cairo Airport, Iberia through Madrid Airport and Lufthansa through Frankfurt Airport. Swiss International Airlines makes a stopover at Zurich Airport and Turkish Airlines stops at Istanbul Airport. These stopovers push the flight time between Johannesburg and London up to anywhere between 12 and-a-half hours and 17 hours. The majority of airlines that fly to London from Johannesburg tend to leave between 7pm and 12pm, with the very occasional flight departing earlier in the afternoon. Because of the popularity of flying to London, a fair number of flights are scheduled every week. For instance, South African Airways has approximately 19 direct flights, British Airways about 13 and Virgin Atlantic Airways about 7 every week.
