International flights departing from other South African cities generally fly first to OR Tambo before embarking on their full journeys. Likewise, international flights tend to land in Johannesburg first before connecting passengers to other cities around South Africa.

Many attractions have been set up for both locals and visitors, often with strong connections to the country’s turbulent history. There are also tours through some of the townships, particularly Soweto, showing the houses where many great leaders, including Nelson Mandela, grew up and where many iconic events occurred. For more traditional ‘cultural’ visits, Museum Africa and the Johannesburg Art Gallery are wonderful showcases of local artistic talent. The Market Theatre is also one of Johannesburg’s top venues for a variety of performances. For people visiting the city with children, there are a couple of wonderful family venues. The Johannesburg Zoo has a multitude of animals on display, and every year towards Christmas time the zoo comes alive with a massive tree of lights and other magical Christmas lights.
