Low Cost Airlines

These cheaper airlines first came to prominence in the US with South West Airlines and in the UK with Ryanair and EasyJet.
Then a few years later South Africa got its first real low cost airline, namely Kulula. Kulula opened up the world of flying to an entirely new demographic many of which had never flown in a plane before.
Swiftly following Kulula.com was Onetime, and then we also got Mango airlines. But what exactly is a low cost airline?

A low cost (sometimes called budget) is an airline that removes the frills from flying in order to decrease the cost. This means that whereas on a typical flight you will receive food and beverages for free, on a lowcost airline, you will need to pay for them. This is not a problem for local flights, but long haul flights would work out to be too difficult and so no budget airline as yet does long haul flights.
These cheap airlines also limit the baggage you can carry, sometimes even charging for hand luggage.
Can they take this cost cutting and revenue generation too far? Well, yes.
Look for example at Ryaniar in the UK. The inside of the place is simply covered in advertising from third parties, and there are rumours that they are apprently considering charging passengers £1 to use the toilet!
